THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY == Not far from John and Caroline’s house in Berkhamsted is the site of one of the most legendary robberies in history. In 1963 using an innovative idea on how to use the signals to stop a train, robbers made a huge haul by stopping the train here, and then moving it to a second bridge, below, and trucking off with the money. They were caught, of course, and the way the police did it was innovative. They went to the pubs where ne’er-do-wells gathered in London and looked for who was missing, knowing the robbers would go underground and hide out. Then they went searching for them and rounded them up.
